Centuries ago, church scholars, bishops and critical thinkers got together to discuss the most pressing and controversial questions of Christendom. They readily acknowledged that something greater than them was happening, but there needed to be a common voice otherwise the good news could be misinterpreted or worse yet, cause division. The first council as they were called was in Nicaea, now present-day Turkey. From this council meeting we get the Nicene Creed. The first council meeting was in 325AD with the last and seventh meeting taking place in 787AD. That means it's been 1,235 years since the last council meeting. Now it could be argued that church conferences happen every year and the same conversations are still happening. My question to you is, is that what it feels like? Does it feel like the church got it all figured out over twelve decades ago OR do we still have some tough discussions that are long overdue? Isaiah 43 18-19 says "forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." The whole idea for a new Nicaea came to me in a dream. My interpretation of the dream was God asking, do you feel you have it all figured out, that there's nothing left to pursue and fight for? Clearly, my answer was no, but everything after that was a mystery. Since that dream almost two years ago I've never seen more division, confusion, or desperation in believers and non-believers in my life. I don't have the answers, but I believe we can create streams in the wasteland.
